How To: 7 Steps to Create a Cosy Hosting Space for Autumn and Winter

If you're hosting guests in your home during Autumn and Winter, it's important to create a cosy space that's comfortable and inviting. Here are a few tips to help make your living room the perfect spot:

1. Invest in some comfortable furniture.

Make sure your guests are comfortable and provide plenty of comfy seating. Ensure that the seating area is big enough to accommodate everyone and if it's not get some big comfy floor cushions so that there are some other seating options available. If you don't want to purchase new furniture, see how you can rearrange your existing pieces to create the ideal layout for a cosy gathering. If you have additional chairs in other rooms, bring them into the hosting space and give the room a little reshuffle - your guests will thank you for it.

If your sofa is looking a little worse for wear, consider investing in some replacement sofa covers and if necessary replacement sofa cushions. We make replacement loose covers for Multiyork furniture. We have a huge variety of fabrics available so you're sure to find something to suit the theme of your decorating scheme. With options including cotton velvet, wool and herringbone tweed there's something to suit every style and taste.

2. Lighten up

If your living room is looking a little dull at the moment, adding some light-coloured furnishings can help to brighten up the space and make it feel more inviting. For example, a cream or pale grey couch or armchair would look great against a dark purple wall.

Alternatively, you might consider repainting the room in a lighter shade and accessorising with darker warm-coloured items to help give it a more cosy and cheerful atmosphere. You could also try adding a large mirror, which will reflect the light and help to make the room feel more spacious.

3. Add plenty of cushions

One of the best ways to create a cosy space is to add lots of colourful and comfortable cushions to the sofa and other seating in the room. This will allow you to easily change the look of the room if you want to jazz things up at a moment's notice. This will also make the space more comfortable and cosy, which is important for those cold winter nights when everyone is gathered around the fire to keep warm!

4. Add a rug

A rug is a great way to add colour and texture to the room, and it will help create a welcoming feeling. Make sure that the rug is large enough to fit underneath all of the chairs in the seating area so that it's protected from scuffs and spills, and it should look neat and stylish as well as practical.

5. Candles!

Candles are a fantastic way to create an inviting atmosphere in a living room, and they can also help to create a cosy ambience on cold days. Keep the lights low so that the candles have maximum impact, and add different scents to the mix to change the mood of the room and give it a more relaxed atmosphere. Peppermint is a good choice for the winter season, but you could try other scented candles like gingerbread and cinnamon as well. If you don't have any candles on hand, you could also try using some potpourri to give the room a subtle fragrance.

6. Decorate the walls

Putting up some decorative items on the walls will add some colour to the room and help give it that "homey" feel that every guest will love. Consider putting up some pictures of the people who live in the house, or maybe some of the family pets so that everyone can feel like they're part of the family when they arrive for a visit.

You can also put up some decorations related to the season to give the room a festive feel. There are all sorts of decorations that you can use to decorate your home for Christmas, from stockings to tinsel trees and everything in between. You could also hang garland around the room to give it an autumn feel, or try hanging up a collection of pumpkins to make your home feel more festive for Hallowe'en. The possibilities are endless when it comes to decorating a room, so don't be afraid to get creative with what you have around the house!

7. Make use of cosy accessories

Candles and cushions fall under this but there are many other room accessories which can help play an important role in making a house feel like a real home. They can be used to create a warm and friendly atmosphere in any living space. There are plenty of accessories to choose from that can help you bring the autumn and winter into your home in a cosy way, blankets, throws, cushions, candles, ornaments and potpourri... the list goes on.

Choose pieces that match your colour scheme to help bring everything together and create a harmonious space. Try mixing and matching different colours and textures to create an interesting look that will be unique to your home.

8. Lamps

Lighting is a hugely important factor when it comes to creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere in your home. The right lighting will make any room more inviting and relaxing, and it can also give your home a cosier feel during the winter months. In the winter months, consider hanging a few lamps from the ceiling or placing them on side tables to provide a little extra light when necessary. They can also be used to add a touch of decoration to the room by adding an eye-catching element to the decor.
